AED Policy

An automated external defibrillator (AED) is used to treat victims who experience
sudden cardiac arrest. It is to be applied to victims who are unconscious, not breathing,
and have no pulse. Call or command someone to call 9-1-1 immediately, then get or call
for AED. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) should be initiated and maintained once
the victim has been assessed as unconscious, breathless and without pulse until the AED
unit is delivered to the scene. The AED unit, when applied to the chest as directed, will
analyze the heart rhythm and advise the rescuer if a shockable rhythm is detected. If such
a rhythm is detected, the AED will charge to the appropriate energy level and either
advise the rescuer to deliver a shock or deliver a shock automatically, depending on the
type of device. If a shockable rhythm is not present and the victim remains unconscious,
not breathing and without pulse, the rescuer should resume and continue CPR until
Emergency Medical Services takes over.

L MEDICAL CONTROL

The Medical Advisor of the AED program is Dr. Craig Corev, MD, FACEP.
