March 20, 2006

Mr. Barry Moose
Division 10 Engineer
North Carolina Board of Transportation
716 West Main Street
Albemarle, NC 28001

RE: Reed Gold Mine Signage

Dear Mr. Moose:

The Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners has been contacted by Bob Remsburg, Manager of Reed
Gold Mine, regarding a request to the N. C. Department of Transportation to have signage for Reed Gold
Mine placed at the 1-485 and Albemarle Road (NC 24-27 interchange). His request was previously
denied as the Reed site is located 13.6 miles from that interchange.

Mr. Remsburg has requested a letter from our Board requesting that NCDOT make an exception from this
distance requirement for Reed Gold Mine signage. Please accept this letter as our support for that
exception and for the placement of the directional signs for Reed Gold Mine.

Cabarrus County is proud to be the home of this cultural and historic site. Signage along 1-485 would add
to the awareness of Reed Gold Mine and encourage travelers to visit the site and learn more about the
gold mining heritage for this area while spending time in Cabarrus County. Also, visitors traveling along
NC 24/27 are likely to utilize businesses in Midland and Locust for their gas, food and supplies. We
welcome the many visitors to our county and their significant economic impact on local businesses and
tourism.

Again, the Board of Commissioners supports the request for the Department of Transportation to consider
waiving the 10-mile rule and place the directional signs for Reed Gold Mine at the Albemarle exit of 1-
485. Should you have any questions regarding this matter, feel free to contact Mike Byrd at
704.920.2148. Thank you for the time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Robert W.
