Helms of the North Carolina Board of Transportation
regarding a request from Reed Gold Mine and the North Carolina Division of State Historic Sites to the
NC Department of Transportation. He has advised me to contact the County Commissioners from
Cabarrus and Stanly Counties asking for your support in fulfilling this request.

Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site would like to have directional signage placed on 1-485 at the
Albemarle exit (NC 24/27). This signage would direct visitors, groups and school field trips on one of the
easiest routes to come to Reed. Signage along 1-485 would also add to the awareness of the Reed site and
encourage travelers to seek and find more about the gold mining heritage of our region. Visitors traveling
along NC 24/27 are likely to utilize the businesses in Midland and Locust for gas, food and supplies.
Also, the longer we can keep someone in the area, the more likely they are to utilize hotels and
restaurants. The economic impact of the 41,000 annual visitors to Reed Gold Mine is significant.
Signage on 1-485 should increase the number of visitors and therefore the economic impact.

The NC Department of Transportation, Division 10 offices have reviewed our request for signage on 1-
485 and have politely rejected that request because of a policy that does not allow for directional signage
more than 10 miles from the attraction. Reed Gold Mine is 13.6 miles from 1-485. Mr. Helms has
advised that we need the support of the Cabarrus and Stanly Commissioners requesting an exception to
the rule. Mr. Helms suggests that a letter of support from you sent to Barry Moose, Division 10 Engineer,
can justify the exception and the NC Department of Transportation will then proceed to place the signs at
the Albemarle exit.

Your help with this project is very much appreciated. If you have any questions, please contact me at
Reed Gold Mine.

Sincerely,

Bob Remsburg, Manager
bob .remsburg@ncmail.net

I=-- I 'S

9621 Reed Mine Road, Midland, NC 28107
Phone: (704)721-4653 Fax: (704)721-4657
