The enlarged gym estimate submitted by the
contractor was done priorito the gym redesign work being completed. There were several items
not taken into considerati~n when the contractor did this early rough estimate along with some
significant price increases since March. I have been working with the architect and the
contractor to redesign and V.E. (value engineer) many of the components in the gym to reduce
the costs to a point where the "enlarge gym" can be built for the original budget. We have
succeeding in reducing the costs to cover everything except the wood floors. It is my
recommendation that we proceed with building the enlarged gyms now and look at other options
to fund the wood floors illj the future, such as;
1. Waiting until next!year and utilize any contingency funds remain from the six school
projects currently ~nder construction to pay for the wood floors.
2. Go back to countyi.commissioners now a request a budget increase to cover the wood
floors. .
Construction of the schools is progressing quickly and so as not to delay the opening of the
schools next year, I have lIuthorized the contractor to install the footings for the gyms based upon
the enlarged plan. The col1tractor has done so and is almost ready to pour the concrete slabs for
the gym areas and I need 110 inform them whether or not the slabs should be depressed for the
hardwood floors. This will require a quick decision from Parks and Recreation and County
Officials if we are to inc1l\de the hardwood floors in the projects. If not, we need to install the
floor slabs flush with the adjacent corridor slabs to receive VCT flooring.

I apologize for the short notice on this issue. If you have any questions, please feel free to call
me at 704-262-6219.

Sincerely,

Samuel Masters
Director of Construction

D-2.
