Description: Work Experience has been useful in the past to not only provide
recipients of Work First with the opportunity to gain good work habits, work
skills, and development of a work ethic. It has also served as a strong
incentive to secure paid employment, as the thought of spending hours
working for no pay seems somewhat unpleasant, even if skills are being
learned. Work Experience in Cabarrus County has generally been used as a
last resort for those who have not been able to secure any kind of job.
b. Provision: Cabarrus County DSS negotiates the work site contracts with
several providers as is deemed necessary throughout the year. In the past
couple of years, we have had Work Experience positions at Cabarrus County
DSS and Employment Security Commission. It was used to give recipients a
"push" to move on to better jobs.
c. Contribution to meeting of goals: Work Experience can contribute to the
meeting of the following goals:
· Employment
· Meeting Federal Participation Rates
· Providing employment services

8. GEDIHS Completion for Teen Heads of Household
a. Description: It is the objective to make every effort to ensure that teenage
heads of household remain in school and graduate or receive a high school
equivalency. They must satisfactorily attend school, and this will be
determined by the public school or community colleges definition of
"satisfactory". In some cases, teens have dropped out of school prior to
graduation to supplement the family income. This is a short-term and
inadequate solution to a problem, and must be avoided whenever possible.
b. Provision: The Work First employment program will identify and target teen
heads of household as quickly as possible once they are recipients of Work
First to ensure that they do indeed remain in school and satisfactorily attend
according to Work First policy guidelines. Those already out of school and
pursing a GED will be required to pursue other work-related activities in
addition to the GED, per Work First guidelines. This will be monitored
monthly, with notification that school officials should contact the social
worker ifthere are attendance or performance problems. The social workers
will work with families to better ensure that households are not in a position
where teens in school feel compelled to drop out to assist in the support of the
household.
c. Contribution to meeting of goals: School completion for teen heads of
households can contribute to meeting the following goals:
· Meeting Federal participation rates

\=- \'\
