Two of our quarries have outdoor classrooms. Smith Grove Quarry located in

Davie County is home to the first Project Wild education site in the State. A distinctive

nature trail leads from the quarry's outdoor classroom to a nearby elementary school.

Students can study large rock samples, wetland areas and stream habitats. The

elementary school has incorporated this nature trail and classroom directly into their

school curricula. On their monthly visits, students discover animal tracks by use of

cover boards, monitor the stream's health by taking water samples, and identify trees,

birds and other animals. Inside the classroom they leam about fossils and natural

history, plant propagation, habitat restoration and aquatic biology. Students from

surrounding counties have also experienced this innovative hands-on, minds-on

program that challenges them to apply classroom science concepts to a real life study.

Hendersonville Quarry has worked with teachers in the local school system to

develop a K-12 outdoor curriculum that enabled us to transform an idea into reality.

Quarry employees created a nature trail and classroom on quarry property that

illustrates the food, water and shelter that is required for a healthy habitat. The

classroom is also used for teaching Backyard Conservation programs. The adjoining

retirement community has been provided direct access to the walking trail.

Having outdoor classrooms is not the only way Vulcan is involved in education.

Many of our facilities are involved in our Adopt-A-School Program. In total we have 25

formal AASP partnerships. Our employees become classroom speakers, mentors, role

models providing needed support to schools in meeting their educational objectives. By

providing classroom presentations and lectures, as well as appropriate supplies and

materials, we are helping students connect academic learning with real world

requirements for achieving a successful life and career.

C~I
