Vulcan Materials Company's (Vulcan) business is mining rock for the production

of crushed stone used in commercial, residential and public construction projects. In

doing so, it is our obligation and responsibility to be responsible stewards of the

environment. The very nature of our business provides us with unique opportunities to

develop wildlife habitat areas as an integral part of our operations. Our quarries are

often located in urbanizir:tg areas close to the consumer demand for our prOducts - the

changing land development in proximity to our facilities can reduce the amount of

natural habitat available for wildlife. Significant portions of our property are set aside for

buffer areas and Vulcan, has a track record of taking a proactive approach to managing

these areas for maximum wildlife habitat, providing a s<?8rce resource for many different
types of wildlife.

'.

Being involved in environmental stewardship is nothing new for Vulcan. In fact,

in 1990 Vulcan had the first property as well as the first quarry in the country to be
certified as a wildlife hal)itat by the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), of which Vulcan is a
founding member. Today, Vulcan has the largest number of WHCcertified sites of any

corporation in the nation with 10 in NC that encompass 1200 acres including two sites

that have certified CorpQrate Lands for Learning programs.

Adjacent to Vulcan's Division Office, located in Winston-Salem is the Joseph

Andres Gutierrez Earth Science Museum and Education Center. School groups

throughout the Piedmont come to the Center each year to learn about mineral

resources and environmental protection. Over 3000 school children each year tour the

facility, which has receiV:ed state and national awards for its significant contribution to

1
I

public education.

C~I
