"Each year our awards committee puts out an all-points-bulletin for conservation
heroes," says Eddie Nickens, chairperson of the Governor's Conservation Achievement
Awards program. "We seek to leam about those people, agencies, and businesses that go
an extra ten miles in the cause of conserving North Carolina's natural treasures. And each
year we are amazed at the commitment and creativity of North Carolina citizens in
protecting wildlife and wild places. And many of our award winners tell us their
Governor's Conservation Achievement Award represents the high point of their career-
whether they are full-time scientists or full-time volunteer conservationists."
Awards winners are nominated by the citizens of North Carolina and decided
upon by a committee of scientists, environmental educators, and conservation activists.
"This awards program brings together a remarkably diverse group of conservationists to
highlight the 'good news' about wildlife conservation in North Carolina," says Bill Kane,
president of the North Carolina Wildlife Federation and a professor of management at
Western Carolina University. "Our primary focus is to applaud and honor these people
who work so hard for wildlife. But we also like to point out that there is so much
common ground shared by people who use the outdoors in North Carolina in very
different ways."
The North Carolina Wildlife Federation is among the state's oldest and largest
conservation organizations, with offices in Raleigh and Charlotte. The mission of the
group is to be the leading advocate for all NC wildlife and its habitat. www.ncwf.org
To find out more about Vulcan Materials Company visit their website at
www.vulcanmaterials.com or contact Thomas E.
