The awards, which include a handsome statuette, were conferred
on the winners at a gal. banquet held in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, on
February 19,2005. .
This year's wi$ers come from all walks ofJife, from mountain regions and
coastal cities. Vulcan's Cabarrus Quarry was the first quarry in the state
to become certified as ~ North Carolina Wildlife Federation Wildlife and Industry
Together site. At two quarries Vulcan has b1.lilt outdoor classrooms. One of Vulcan's
quarries was the first ~oject Wild education site in the state. In all, Vulcan actively
manages over 1200 actes ofJand for wildlife habitat and is adding more each year.
The very na~ofVulcan's business means that its quarries must be located near
urbanizing areas, and . t urbanization, as we all know, costs wildlife their homes,
nesting grounds, and f1 ding areas. "Vulcan needs buffer areas around its quarries, and it
has taken a proactive, -beyond-the-ca1l-of-duty approach to managing those areas for
wildlife habitat, far beyond what is required by rule and regulation," states Federation
WAIT Coordinator, T~ Gestwicki.
For their commitm+nt and wildlife workplace stewardship efforts, Vulcan Materials
Company is the Feder, tion's 2004 Business Conservationist of the Year.
I
:

\
I

0-1
