NORTH CAROLINA

NCIIIeI!JII
--~ ,",.,,- ...,---.-

ECONOMIC DEVELOPERS ASSOCIATION

Contact: Abbie Hollins
W: 919.882.1906
M: 919.395.2442

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AUGUST 18, 2005

TOP ECONOMIC DEVELOPERS GROUP RELEASES NEW POLL,
RESULTS SHOW PUBLIC STRONGLY SUPPORTS INCENTIVES

RALEIGH, NC - By a two to one margin, North Carolinians support offering
companies economic development incentives like tax credits to locate in the state,
according to results of a statewide survey released today by the North Carolina Economic
Developers Association (NCEDA).

"North Carolinians want something done about creating more jobs in our state, and
overwhelmingly support the use of economic development incentives as a means to that
end," said Scott Millar, president ofNCEDA's board of directors and an industrial
recruiter from Hickory.

The poll of 600 people was taken for NCEDA by Frederick Polls of Washington, D.C.
from July 28-Aug. 1.

Millar said the poll shows clearly that North Carolinians don't want the courts involved
in the incentives issue. For example, nearly three out of four respondents (73%) said that
the Governor and State Legislature, rather than the Judges and the Courts "should
determine whether or not North Carolina offers economic development incentives for
companies.. . to relocate to the state."

Among other results:

· 80% agreed that North Carolina should feel proud when it wins a competition
against other states and other countries to attract large major ernployers to locate
here.

· By a margin of6l % to 28% North Carolinians agreed that the Legislature should
continue to provide economic development incentives such as tax credits to
compames.

· 84% agreed that "as long as other states and countries throughout the world offer
economic incentives to recruit new companies, North Carolina must do so to stay
competitive. "

· 78% agreed that economic development incentives like tax credits help make
North Carolina's economy strong.

- MORE -

G-~l
