A L. Brown H~gh School is conbnu~ng to add high-level courses to ~ts curriculum in order
to boost student achievement. It remains the only school in our region to host a Cyber
Campus. This facility connects our students to the prestigious North Carohna School of
Science and Mathematics in Durham as well as to universities and museums throughout
the state.

Healthy students in safe, orderly, and caring schools

Students and staff in Kannapolis City Schools are extremely safe. We have an excellent
safety record, including the fact that we have not had any firearms or serious injuries on
any of our campuses dunng the past several years.

Kannapolis City Schools has a comprehensive Character Education Program that
teaches and models six important character traits: respect, responsibility, caring, honesty,
perseverance, and citizenship We established the program in 1997 with the help of
community members. It is part of our successful effort to make our schools safe, orderly,
and canng environments for students and staff.

In addition to keeping children safe, we are committed to helping them stay healthy. Our
Chdd Nutrition Program has led the way in providing meals that are Iow in fat and high in
nutrition. We have eliminated french fries in our elementary schools, and we have added
fat-free yogurt, Iow-fat pizza, and Iow-fat muffins to our menus. We also offer salad at
least three days a week. Similar changes are planned for the m~ddle and high school
levels.

We understand that every child needs a good breakfast to succeed in school and to
remain healthy. That ~s why we take advantage of a federal program that allows us to
offer every K-8 child in our system a free, nutritious breakfast. We are the only school
system in our area taking part in this program. All students in grades k~ndergarten
through eight are served a healthy breakfast inside their classrooms when they arrive at
school. Principals have reported that the program has improved not only academic
performance but also students' behavior. It also has reduced tardiness and absenteeism.

Quality teachers, administrators, and staff

KCS is committed to hiring the best teachers, administrators, and staff. To give you an
idea of how selecbve we are, we hired only 73 teachers for this school year. However,
we received more than 600 mail-in applications as well as more than three thousand
applications through our website. We attend job fairs in North Carolina and all over the
country to make sure we contact as many quality candidates as possible.

Our teachers are extremely talented and qualified. We have a higher percentage of fully
licensed teachers than the state average as well as a higher percentage of teachers who
are certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. We also are the
only area school system to have a National Educator of the Year. In addition, our KCS
Teacher of the Year has been accepted as a professional trainer by the National Board
for Professional Teaching Standards

Our principals are highly qualified as well. Nearly half of them have advanced degrees
beyond a master's degree, and they have an average of more than 29 years experience
in public education.
