During an average year, David will educate the public during 10 speak, lng engagements to local groups <br /> and 3000 phone calls. <br /> <br /> David develops educational programs for the ornamental horticulture industry though an industry steering <br /> committee. He has developed a Greenshare program for professionals. Greenshaxe teaches the retail garden center <br /> employees and other horticulture professionals to answer the 100 most common horticulture questions they receive <br /> on ~e job. This course was taught in 1994, 1996 and 2001. Home Depot, WalMart, True Value, every major <br /> local nursery and several landscapers have enrolled a total of 115 professionals in this course. <br /> <br /> David has also started Southem Piedmont Horticulture Association. This local industry group has had <br /> regular educational meetings since 2000. <br /> <br /> Commercial vegetable producers have lowered cost and improved profitability. When David first started <br />in 1986, the local farmers market averaged 12 farmers during peak season. The market operated under tarps <br />supported by metal frames. David works through the Board of Directors to effect positive change for this clientele. <br />The market now serves 36 vendors during peak times with over 50 farm families benefiting from the market <br />annually. Under David's guidance the market has built an open air sales building for 24 spaces in 1988. In 1999 <br />David wrote two grants that allowed the market to expand the building. The market now has a total of 30 sales <br />spaces and bathrooms. David has supported the market by advising the Board of Directors and conducting <br />educational meetings for the Board of Directors and vendors. He has helped in site maintenance, site improvement, <br /> <br />recruiting market managers and promoting the Farmer Market. David has worked with the market to develop long <br />range goals and improve the financial stability of this market. Recently, the market has expanded to a new <br />location and added a Christmas show. Without the ongoing support of David, the farmers' market would not have <br />grown and may not have even survived. <br /> <br /> David introduced drip irrigation to local farmers with several demonstrations between 1986 and 1998. 25 <br />farmers adopte~i this technology with significant increases in profitability for certain crops. <br /> <br /> Beyond his major horticulture program, David also participates in the entire county program. As pesticide <br />coordinator he teaches private applicator pesticide recertification classes each year. He teaches several 4-H <br />summer fling classes including the popular survival class that was a national finalist in 4-H and Youth. Over 323 <br />youth have taken the survival course. Over 90 youth have taken classes taught by David on forestry, ecology, deer <br />hunting and muzzleloading. <br /> <br /> <br />
