David is currently working on a major community beautification project involving the restoration of a <br /> historic community cemetery. The Old Campground Cemetery is a 16-acre tract in a highly visible site <br /> abandoned before 1948. David recruited volunteers from the Master Gardeners, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Histroic <br /> Concord and Concord city. He also recruited community service workers. He supervised up to 70 people with up <br /> to 15 chains saws on 7 different workdays. Volunteers cleared over 70 dumptmcks loads of brash, and removed 60 <br /> cubic yards of trash. He has written two mini grants which provided enough herbicide to treat 4 acres of kudzu. <br /> While some restoration remains to be done, this community beautification project has improved a historical <br /> resource. <br /> <br /> David's efforts to maintain professional excellence include numerous formal and informal opportunities. <br />While maintaining full time employment, he has taken 37 credit hours of post graduate work. Courses included <br />Physiology of Landscape Plants, Programming, Special Problems in Entomology, Pant Disease, Principles, <br />Diagnosis and Management, Special topic Plant Pathology, Special Topics in Horticulture, Plant Taxonomy. <br />Organic and Sustainable Vegetable Production, Research Principles, and Ethics in Agriculture. This culminated in <br />earning a Master of Horticulture degree with a 3.95 average from 1996 to 1998. He became a certified plantsman <br />in 1996. <br /> <br /> After beginning his extension career with no computer skills, David has taken numerous short computer <br />classes. These classes have been offered by Cooperative Extension, Rowan Community College and Cabarrus <br /> <br />County. As a result, David is proficient at word processing and powerpoint. He is the webmaster for the county <br />webpages and shares responsibility for county systems administrator. <br /> <br /> David has attended every state meeting for the last eight tears. He attended the National meeting in <br />Charlotte NC, Casper WY, and Albuquerque NM. He has twice served as District Secretary for the Southwest <br />District Agriculture Agents association. He has served on benevolence, and program committees at the district <br />level. <br /> <br /> David is a member of the Garden Writers Association of America. <br /> <br /> <br />
