This subdivision is currently in the Rocky River
~lementary School, C. C. Griffin Middle School,. and Central Cabarrus High School
tttendance areas.
~he current enrollment at Rocky River Elementary School is approximately ~00 hundred
;tudents owe~ core capacity. Hopefully, when the Board approves the boundary for the
replacement Bethel Elementary School we will reduce the enrollment at Rocky River
~lementary School by approximately 200 students. We will open the new Bethel Elementary
~chool in August, 2004. Rocky River Elementary is also projected to lose additional
;tudents in 2005 with the opening of a new elementary school on Pitts School Road. The
~itts School Road Elementary School boundary has not be~n approved so we do not know what
:he impact will be on Rocky River and Harrisburg elementary schools. We are aware that
additional subdivisions in the _Zion Church Road East and Zion Church Road area are being
:onsidered. These subdivisions will also impact Rocky River Elementary School, C. C.
~riffiin Middle School. and Central. Cabarrus H~gh School.
~e are greatly concerned with the middle and high school situation due to limited seating
available at C. C. Griffin and Central Cabarrus.
~oth of these schools are projected to exceed their adjusted core capacity within the next
:wo years.
Fhe timeline for a new high school is 2007-08 and a new middle school is 2008-09 assuming
Ce are able to stay on schedule with our 15-Year Facility Plan. We have discovered a
iirect correlation between student growth and the number of buildiing permits issued each
;ear. Therefore, we are very concerne~ with the impact of new growth, par5icularly in the
~rea adjacent to Mecklenburg County. Also, note that areas under the jurisdiction of
{arrisburg are impacting our growth.
{opefully, the Cabarrus County Planning and Zoning Board will keep this in mind as they
~eview new subdivisions in the above mentioned area of the county.
Bhanks for allowing us the opportunity to make comments concerning the impact on schools
)y new residential construction.
