April 3, 2003

TO:

SUBJECT:

County Commission Chairmen and Mayors of Regional Governmental Entities
REQUEST TO ADOPT RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF
NORTH CAROLINA AT CHARLOTTE

During our January Annual Planning Sessions, we discussed the dramatic economic changes that
North Carolina is undergoing. Dudng the course of those discussions, our Commissions were
enlightened on the greater role that higher education can provide to the entire region, if funded
equitably.
At those meetings, we also discussed the value of the UNC Charlotte Research Institute and the
fact it would be a major drawing card in attracting new business and industry and in bdnging new
people to our region who would be highly skilled and intelligent in the area of research and
development. This would not only have a positive impact on our communities and our quality of life,
but would have a significant impact on economic development.
We have attached a resolution for consideration by your respective councils and commissions and
ask that upon its adoption that you supply a copy to your local legislators and then begin an active
campaign among the legislators to support equitable funding for UNC Charlotte.
We are very excited about this regional effort and hope that you will join us by adopting the
resolution and seeking support of the legislators. We feel certain that Dr. James Woodward would
be pleased to provide any information you may desire. You may also contact either Tom,
TomCox@TomCox.net, or me, KINGSPINNACLE@aol.com, as we will also be available to answer
any questions or render any assistance you may need. Let's all work together diligently to bring this
endeavor to fruition! Thanking you in advance, we remain, sincerely,

~an
Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners

arpente~, Ch. air. m_ar
ounty Board of Commissioners

CC;

County and City Managers
Dr. James Woodward, Chancellor UNC Charlotte
