MECKLENBURG B ~)ARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF TI~ UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHARLOTTE WHEREAS, th~ economy &North Carolina is undergoing a dramatic change; and, WH[EREAS, succ~ ~sful competition within the new economic environment requires a greater role for higher edu¢ [tion; and, WHEREAS, The 1 Iniversity of North Carolina has embraced this enhanced role and is increasingly directing its in tructional, research, and service programs to encourage and assist economic development; an~ WHEREAS, UNC 2harlotte is the campus of the University pnncipally responsible for serving the Charlotte-Mec~ enburg region; and, WHEREAS, various bodies concerned with the economic well-being of the Charlotte- Mecklenburg region have i~entified the growth of UNC Charlotte, in size and m scope, as critical to the region's economic d~elopment; and, 1 WHEREAS, UNCICharlotte has responded by increasing the size of its student body; by ,ecially at the graduate level in technology and science-based research programs that undergird economic growth; and by changes such as the establishment of the College of Information ..chnology Transfer, and the Charlotte Research Institute, all intended ity with the public and private bodies concerned with economic adding degree programs, es disciplines; by strengthenin ~mplementing organization Technology, the Office of' to better connect the univen development; and, WHEREAS, the St funded to carry out its expa~ WHEREAS, previ¢ research programs related tc region; and, ,te of North Carolina must ensure that UNC Charlotte is adequately ded role in economic development; and, State investments aimed at strengthening instructional and economic development have tended to be focused on one geographic WHEREAS, future-State investments must recognize the critical importance of the economic well-being of the 2harlotte-Mecklenburg region to that of the entire State; BE IT THEREFOI ',E RESOLVED, that the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners calls upon tl this region, to ensure equital participates in any new inve and infrastructure intended emerging fields such as bio' and nanotechnology.
