Section 1
Geographic and Solid Waste Stream
Evaluation

1.1 Geographic Area
This solid waste management plan covers Cabarrus County and Kannapolis,
Harrisburg, Midland, and Mount Pleasant. A portion of the City of Karmapolis lies in
Rowan County, but municipal solid waste from the entire city limits is disposed of at
the Lowes Motor Speedway (LMS) landfill.

The most recent population figures available from the North Carolina Office of State
Planning (OSPL) are for the period ending July 2001. Population estimates for the
County and each of its municipalities are summarized below in Table 1.

Table 1. Estimated Population, July 2001

MUNICIPALITIES & COUNTY POPULATION
Cabarrus County. 136,312
City of Kannapolis (Cabarrus County Only) 28,719
City of Concord 58,710
Town of Mount Pleasant 1,298
Town of Midland 2,627
Town of Harrisburg 4,795

Between 2001 and 2005, the OSPL expects the population of Cabarrus County to reach
150,296, which represents a growth rate of 4%. Projecting out to the remainder of the
10-year planning period (2010), the OSPL expects the County population to rise to
166,897, an 18.3% increase over the current population.

1.2 Waste Stream Evaluation
In this plan, residential waste refers to waste generated by households (individual
and multi-family dwellings). The term non-residential refers to waste generated from
commercial, industrial, and institutional activities. Construction and demolition
waste is generated from construction activities and is separated from non-residential
waste in this plan because it will be disposed in a different facility than most non-
residential waste.

According to the most recent available County Waste Disposal Report provided by
the Solid Waste Section, Cabarrus County and its municipalities disposed of
approximately 187,508 total tons of waste in FY 2000-2001. This tonnage included
90,040 tons of C&D waste disposed of at the County's C&D landfills, 97,375 tons of
waste landfilled at the LMS landfill, and 93 tons of waste transported out of the
County for disposal at other facilities. An estimate of the waste disposed by sector is

P \Cabarrus - 1278~38870 Updale Sol~ Waste Man P~an ,~mend~ent 21~'efl~ts'~Dra~ Refx~Sect~on 1 doc
