Section 5
Solid Waste Management Methods: Assessment of Programs and Description of Intended Actions

Table 8.

Cabarrus County Recycled Materials and Tonnages 2001-02

MATERIAL TONNAGE
Glass, Plastic, Aluminum and 208.71
Steel Cans (co-mingled)
White Goods/Metal 1012.59
Newspaper (indudingmixed 301.68
paper)
Cardboard 61.41
White Paper 3.89

Intended Actions: The County and the municipalities have all expressed their
desire to continue with viable recycling prbgrams. The County is presently
examining the feasibility of recycling C&D waste disposed of at their landfill and is
also establishing an aluminum can recycling program in conjunction with local
corporations. Furthermore, the County has hired a Recycling Coordinator to aid in
identifying new recycled material markets and to develop good relationships with all
municipalities and several commercial, industrial and institutional waste generators.

Reaching the waste reduction goals for the future requires continued efforts to
promote public awareness. Raising the public's consciousness would be
accomplished through education programs at schools and outreach programs
targeted to commercial and industrial waste generators.

5.4 Reuse
Current Program: The County and its municipalities do not currently have an
extensive reuse program.

Intended Actions: The new household hazardous waste collection facility includes a
"paint swap shop". Usable latex paint is collected and stored at the site and
distributed to any interested party free of charge.

5.5 Composting and Mulching
Composting
Current Program: The County and each municipality all offer composting services.
Yard waste, land cleaning debris, and wood waste are chipped or composted and
either given to the public, used on public works projects or sold.

P \Cabarrus - 1278~38870 Update Sol,ct Waste Man Plan, Amendment 21~tefx~Is\Orafl ReCo~Sectton 5 doc

5-3
