Section 6 <br /> <br />Education, Special Wastes, Illegal Disposal, <br />and Purchasing: Assessment of Programs <br />and Description of Intended Actions <br /> <br />6.1 Community and School Education <br />Community Education <br />Current Program: The City of Kannapolis provides pamphlets, advertising and will <br />provide a speaker for community meetings when requested. Mount Pleasant provides <br />pamphlets to residents that are available at the Town Hall. Town employees will <br />review regulations and programs with residents when they come in to pay their water <br />bills. North Mecklenburg Sanitation provides literature for residents of Harrisburg. <br />The Town also communicates with residents in a message line on their water bills. <br /> <br />Intended Actions: Current programs used by the municipalities will remain in <br />effect. The County Recycling Coordinator will be responsible for developing <br />beneficial relationships between the community and commercial and industrial waste <br />generators. The Recycling Coordinator will also be responsible for identifying <br />potential source reduction options. The Recycling Coordinator will take thee lead role <br />with regard to informing, updating and involving the community on recycling, <br />special waste collection, and waste reduction issues. <br /> <br />6.2 Special Waste Management <br />Tires <br />Current Program: The County accepts tires at the landfill from private citizens only <br />with a maximum of five hres per load. Residents must bring tires to the landfill for <br />collection. <br /> <br />Intended Actions: Tires that are collected at the landfill are delivered to a private <br />firm, U.S. Tire, in Concord, North Carolina. <br /> <br />6.3 White Goods <br />Current Program: The County collects white goods at the landfill and sells the <br />metal on the open market. Each municipality in the planning area provides collection <br />of white goods for their residents and delivers them to the County landfill. <br /> <br />Intended Actions: At the present time, the County intends to continue the white <br />goods collection program. In addition, the County, in conjunction with the City of <br />Concord, has developed a permanent white goods and household hazardous waste <br />drop-off facility that is now available for use. The facility is within the city limits of <br />Concord off Highway 49, which provides a more centralized location to allow easier <br />drop-off for all municipalities. <br /> <br />6-1 <br /> <br /> <br />
