· Scored an increase in both math and reading grade-level proficiency in NC SOS programs with minority <br /> participants making significantly greater improvements than white students. <br />· Have improved behavior as surveyed by math and reading teachers, noting over 41% students demonstrated <br /> improvement. <br /> <br />Students enrolling are from targeted populations but with open enrollment to all. Parents, school personnel and <br />the Department of Social Services recommend students to the program who are at dsk because of academic <br />difficulties, behavior problems, high suspension rate, poor attendance or being home alone after school. The # of <br />children enrolled in SOS/Summer PACK by year are: 1996 107; 1997 166; 1998 150; 1999 119 .; 2000 130 .; <br />2001 172 .; 2002 108 . (In 2002, a new middle school opened which diminished the total school enrollment at our <br />sites.) The program is designed to serve an enrollment of 20-30 students at each school with a student to staff <br />ratio of 12:1. In addition, students have access to after school tutoring by classroom teachers. Students with <br />working parents are more easily able to participate in athletics and school extra curricular activities. Volunteers <br />assist with homework, enrichment and recreational activities. Students in our program are able to have interactions <br />with a large number of interested, caring adults. We strive to improve the physical, intellectual, emotional and <br />social needs of young people; to involve community volunteers and to enhance collaboration among <br />agencies that provide community resources for <br />children. <br /> <br />Each day, students choose from a variety of nutritious snacks. Mondays through Thursdays feature one hour per <br />day of supervised homework time and also time for enrichment that includes computer and logical thinking skill <br />development as well as academic and cultural activities. Students help set guidelines for daily behavior and the <br />consequences involved as well as help plan, organize and lead program and service learning activities. Students <br />are provided with opportunities for career exploration through the Learning for Life curriculum and community <br />involvement through service learning. The structured, yet inviting environment challenges and guides students to <br />set goals, to plan, and to excel. Students participate with the staff and parents in goal setting and periodic <br />evaluation of their school successes. Activities are clustered around theme-based program modules that combine <br />academics, physical fitness, and life skills into fun and challenging programs. Certification is given upon the <br />successful completion of the study skill and time management modules. Students may participate in the Time to <br />Read literacy improvement curriculum and well as the Accelerated Reader program. <br /> <br />Fun Fridays reward students with special activities and field trips to become acquainted with the resources in the <br />community. Family Fun Nights allow students to plan and prepare food and activities for family members to share <br />together. A Recognition and Awards Night is held annually to recognize individual achievement and group <br />accomplishments. Daily contact is made with parents or guardians to give the opportunity to assess activities of <br />the day, provide support for the family, and serve as a liaison for the school, child and family. 4-H SOS <br />Goldminers emphasize a student/family focus that utilizes school and community support to help <br />integrate our youth to become good citizens and valuable leaders. <br /> <br />With the continued excellent cooperation and support of the administration and staff at Mount Pleasant and <br />Concord Middle Schools as well as our other collaborating agencies, 4-H SOS Goldminers can continue to guide <br />at-risk youth to more successful lives. <br /> <br /> <br />
