Project Narrative (must directly affect the needs of children)
Provide a brief description of the proposed project in the space provided. Include the goals of the project and the number of
children served by this project each year.
The focus of this project will be to extend the 4-H SOS Goldminers after school program at Mount Pleasant and
Concord Middle Schools, ensuring the students from these schools have the same opportunities for a fun,
academically and personally enriching program afforded by our original, funded school. The need for services at
these two schools were identified by Cabarrus County School administrators because of the high number of
students receiving free and reduced lunches, high minority number, lower academic achievement, and high rate of
children going home to empty homes. The hours of operation are from school dismissal until 6:00 p.m.

The objectives of the program are to: 1) reduce the number of unsupervised students after school, 2) improve
academic performance and school attendance of participants, 3) meet physical, intellectual, emotion and social
needs of participants, and 4) improve attitudes and behaviors.

An enrollment of 60 students, with an average daily attendance of 26 at each school will be provided in a safe,
challenging, nurturing place for students who are at a particularly unique and difficult stage of their lives. A
nutritious snack, homework help, recreational and enrichment activities as well as opportunities for academic and
leadership skill development will also be provided. Fun Friday field trips will allow students to participate and
become acquainted with community resources and career exploration activities.
