The <br />Notice of the ~ublic Hearing was publi~hed in THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER <br />(Cabarru8 Neighbors) on July 6, ~003, ·nd in THE INDHFEN~ENT TRIBUNE on <br />7, 2003. <br /> <br /> Mr. Philip .Jmith, member of the C·barrus Civic Foundation Corporation, <br />presented ·n ove:~iew of efforts over · period of 20 years to build · <br />convention center in C·b·rrus County. Highlights included the formation cf <br /> · <br />23-member Cabarrut Civic Foundation Corporation in 1984 to bring attention <br />the value of · c(invention center, · 1987 study that confirmed the need <br />such a facility and an updated comprehensive study in 1997 that reconfirmed <br />the need for ·c nvention center and included information on financing and <br />recommended sites.' <br /> <br /> MS. Betty TIomaa, member of the Civic Foundation Corporation, spoke in <br />support of a co:~vention center in Cabarrus County. She outlined such <br />benefits as added jobs, increased revenue flow in the community and acting as <br />· catalys~ for mo~ restaurants, hotels, stores and related facili~ies. <br /> <br /> Mr. Harold ~JcEachern, member of the Civic Foundation Corporation, spoke <br />in support of th·proposed convention center and an increase in the occupancy <br />~ax.
