Judicial District 19A, Cabarrus County, continues a collaborative relationship with the six high schools in the county, with two officers working with all the high schools and carrying a caseload of school age offenders. These two officers, David Calloway (supervising the intermediate punished school age offender) and Tara Kimble (supervising the community punished offender) also supervise other offenders as well. These officers work closely with the School Resource Officers in each school to make sure school age offenders are complying with their probation judgments as well as following school rules and regulations. The probation judgments for this population have several special conditions to include: · Must maintain a "C" average · Treat school administration faculty and staff courteously and with respect · Participate only in extracurricular activities pre-approved by the principal. An infraction against a school rule or regulation could result in a violation of the offender's probation. Faced with the prospect of a possible jail sentence or other punishment from the court system, these students are more likely to change their behaviors than any other type of offender supervised. Both officers are role models to some of these offenders and the officers show a tree interest in all the activities of the offenders--from schoolwork completed to the types of friends they have. Officers even attend after school activities such as sports or school club functions and show a genuine interest in the students they are supervising. The offenders respond positively to this interest by their officers as well, sometimes for the first time in their lives, having an adult show true interest in their well-being. At the present time, we have 10 offenders that are under the School Partnership Program. This number varies, depending on the school year and also other factors such as graduating students. For FY 2002-2003, 17 offenders were served under this program. 17
