2001-02 RATED LICENSE GRANT (Afterschool Programs)

NEED STATEMENT

Concern for the need of quality school-age care has been expressed in Cabarrus County.
Many afferschool sites in Cabarrus County are still working toward licensing their afferschool
programs. The need for quality day care is of great concern to many parents in Cabarrus County.

Parents are looking for centers that are open before school and afterschool hours and provide
transportation to and from the elementary school. Almost every day care center in Cabarrus
County has a waiting list for afterschool care. The number of working parents in Cabarrus
County is very high and the need for quality school-age care is in great demand.

Three sites are in critical need of additional training and technical support that
Cooperative Extension can assist with. Two of the three sites are actively seeking a teraporary
license and one site will be ready to apply for the star rated license~

OBJECTIVES

This project will improve the quality of care in three af~erschool centers (Pitts Baptist
Child Development Center Afterschool Program, Roberta United Methodist Afterschool
Program, and Rocky River Kids:Plus). In addition, this project will enhance their programs by
providing educational supplies, age appropriate furnishings, and create a more relaxing
environment for the af~erschool children. The System Manager will provide on-going guidance
and one-on-one support to the three programs seeking at least a three star rating. Rocky River
has a temporary license and will be applying for a five star rating. Roberta United Methodist and
Pitts Baptist Af~erschool will both be applying for a temporary license and then will be applying
for a five star rating.

2
