Approved Dwelling Units - Kannapolis City School District
Updated Februar', 2002

Dwellin~ Middle Elementary High
Units School School School
Students Students Students
Approved and Constructed in past 18
404 57 109 57
months*
Approved or Pending Approval 1,556 218 420 218
(Unbuilt or Under Construction)**
Total ! 1'96° H 275 529 275

* many of these homes are unoccupied and likely have not begun to fully impact the school system yet.
** one large development is pending a rezoning decision; without the zoning change, the development would likely
result in 100 less dwelling units (55 less studer s)

It is important to note that these figures do not include the natural cumulative affect of the
pass through from elementary school to middle school to high school. It also does not
include infill development or new residents with school-aged children in existing
housing. These factors, and others, such as dropouts were included in the Task Force
Report.

I hope this information prbvides you with the information that you need. I think the
numbers are evidence that, while the details have changed, the overall projected impact
of new residential development in the school district remains significant. I believe that
this growth spread out rather evenly over the next 5-7 years. I also believe that the
potential exists for continued new growth (albeit slower) for another 5-10 years, after
which most of the available land within the school district will be developed and growth
will likely slow dramatically.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding this information.

Sincerely,

Mike Legg
Assistant City Manager

cc: Mike Mahaney, City Manager
