On December 7,2001, a fundraiser benefit was held in Concord, North Carolina, for the 911
Relief Fund to benefit law enforcement, firefighters, and victims of the World Trade Center
Tragedy. This benefit was sponsored by the Third Division NCPPA (North Carolina
Probation/Parole Officers Association) and chaired by Chief Probation Officer Ronda Powell
and Intensive Case Officer Dana Nance, both of Cabarms County. These two individuals put in
countless personal hours organizing this event to raise money for this benefit. A luncheon was
held at Concord Fire Department #3. Probation officers from across this division were asked to
attend and requested to donate $10 to each lunch. Local officials were also invited to attend.
Chief Hamilton, Chief of Police, Concord Police Department, Chief Holloway, Fire Department
Chief, Concord City, and Sheriff Brad Riley attended this function. All food, supplies, and door
prizes were donated by local businesses. Both Mrs. Nance and Mrs. Powell organized staff to
volunteer with this major project. Approximately $2000 was raised for this benefit. A
firefighter in New York City donated a print, which was mounted and framed and presented to
the Concord Fire Department #3. In addition, a check for $500 was presented to Concord Fire
Department #3. A slide presentation was shown offering memories of the tragedy that occurred
in New York City at the World Trade Center on September 11. If not for the tireless efforts of
both chairwomen and the staff of the Division of Community Corrections in Cabarrus County,
this worthwhile event would not have taken place.

The nominees for Probation/Parole Officer of the Year 2001 were Ronda Powell and Dana
Nance. Both chaired the 911 Relief Fund Benefit and worked tirelessly to organize volunteers
and obtain donations to make this benefit a resounding success.
