March 16, 2001

ROCKY RIVER

PRESBYTERIAN
CHURCH
Come Just As You Are

The Board of Commissioners for Cabarrus County
PO Box 707
Concord, NC 28026

Re: Proclamation of the 250th Anniversary of Rocky River Presbyterian Church

Rocky River Presbyterian Church, located on Rocky River Road in western Cabarms County, was
orgarfized in 1751, making it the oldest Presbyterian church between the Yadkin and Catawba
Rivers. This congregation has offered leadership in the area from the time of the Cabarrus Black
Boys in 1771 to the present. Dr. John Makemie Wilson, minister from 1802 to 183 l, established
the Rocky River Academy which was a classical school to prepare young men for admittance to
universities. Today this congregation of 315 worships in the church's fourth sanctuary which was
built in 1860. Volunteering in area programs such as Habitat for Humanity's annual Presbyterian
house, CVAN, Meals on Wheels, Cooperative Christian Ministry, and the Community Free Clinic
allows our members to serve the citizens of our county.

Enclosed is a proposed proclamation that, if authorized by the Board, would acknowledge the Place
of this congregation in the history of Cabarrus County. We ask that this proclamation be
considered at the March 26, 2001, meeting of the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners. The
proclamation will be read at Rocky River Presbyterian Church on Sunday, April 29 and Sunday,
May 6.

We appreciate the Board's consideration of this request. The members of the Board of
Commissioners are invited to worship at Rocky River Presbyterian Church on the occasion of this
anniversary celebration on Sunday, May 6 at 11 a.m. followed by Dinner in the Grove.

Sincerely yours,

Marie Mondson
C]mirnlan
250th Anniversary Committee

~ -. ?,,~)

7940 Rocky River Road · Concord, NC 28025 · (704) 455-2479
