The industries in Harrisburg represent a wide variety of products
including wood products, metal components, plastics and chemicals. There is also one industry
which repairs textile machinery. There are, however, no textile or apparel plants located in
Harrisburg. This is unusual for Cabarms as textile plants are the largest employers in the County's
three other municipalities (Kannapolis, Concord and Mount Pleasant).

Some explanations for textiles not having a larger role in Harrisburg's economy are related to
the Town's history and location. Cabarms County-has a.strong textile background. Many mill
villages which contain housing units originally built for textile employees are still found in areas near
textile mills. Some communities, both incorporated and unincorporated, were formed as a result or
in conjunction with a textile mill. Harrisburg, does not owe its initial growth and development to the
textile industry. Rather, the Town has grown as a result of its proximity and ease of access to
Charlotte. The wide variety of industries located in Harrisburg is also representative of the industrial
diversification efforts undertaken in Cabarms County.

Area Employment

Within five miles of the Harrisburg planning area there are several additional industrial,
professional, and service positions not counting those located in Harrisburg. The largest industrial
employers within this area in Cabarms County are Philip Morris and Coming. The Philip Morris
plant is located within the corporate limits of Concord and employs over 1,000 persons while the
newly opened Coming fiber-optics plant is located in the Midland area and will eventually employ
700. Another large employer is S & D Coffee which employs approximately 300 persons.
Additional industrial employment is located along Derita Road near the recently completed Concord
