social interaction with peers and adults, and meaningful participation. The intent is to
provide guidance and support to this often overlooked age group who are at a time in
their lives when they are subject to intense peer pressure, parental expectation,
confusing health issues, intensified school work, as well as developing adolescence
issues.

Daily contact is made with parents or guardians to give the opportunity to assess
activities of the day and to provide support to the family. Staff members serve as a
liaison between the school, the child, and the family. Opportunities for the entire famity
to interact with program members are promoted by Family Fun Nights.

During the 2000-2001 school year, the total enrollment of 4-H SOS Goldminers is 110
with an average daily attendance of 48. Some students participate daily, while others
come on a drop-in basis. The fee for participation is $25.00 per week and $6.00 per
day. Full and partial scholarships are re.adily available.

Because of late funding, the programs at Concord Middle School and Mount Pleasant
Middle School began approximately one month after school began. Many parents had
already made plans for their children. We propose to mail information and registration
forms before school starts to each child's home to ensure that each family receives
notice of the program. We also propose working more closely with the teachers and
guidance counselors at Concord Middle School to better alert them to the services
provided by our program. We will continue to search for volunteers who will assist in
tutodng and in providing interesting, exciting enrichment activities.

BUDGET/FINANCES
Successful expansion may qualify for additional money from the N. C. Department of
Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention SOS grant if the North Carolina budget
permits in 2001-2002. Applications to other granting agencies will be made.

Cabarrus County Schools is in the process of applying for a federal grant that would
supplement and assist our program for three years if it is awarded.

In order to continue to offer a quality afterschool program at Concord Middle School,
funds must be obtained to supplement those already supplied by fees and the SOS
grant. The amount requested from this grant has been planned with an eye toward spare
economy. We propose to serve more students in 2001-2002. In-kind support from
Cabarrus County Schools, Cooperative Extension, Second Harvest Food Bank, and
other community agencies and business will continue to be solicited.

We have been the recipients of generous support of Philip Morris USA Positive Youth
Development Initiative to begin the Mount Pleasant program with $35,000 in January
2000 and the Concord program with $35,000 in September 2000.
