GlaXoSmithKline
Child Health Recognition Awards
Celebrating the People and Programs of Public Health

hwArabian proverb says that he who has his health has hope, and he who
has hope has eve,,r~hing. Ralph'Waldo Emerson believed that"'The first
ealth is health.' PuNic health professionals know that both assertions
are true, and every day they give hope to children and their families as they help
them create the kind of wealth that really matters. They know that miracles can
happen every day--when you work hard for them.

Public health professionals devote themselves to ensuring that every young
person has the healthiest childhood possible. From the beaches.to the mountains
and from rural areas to big cities, these unsung heroes and heroines are hard at
work in every community to ensure the health and well-being of children.
Whether it is creating a mobile dental clinic for children in rural areas, providing
counsding about pregnancy prevention and family planning, researching
pediatric asthma, or forming alliances to provide quality health care to the
immigrant Latino population, the work of-these dedicated professionals benefits
us all. Public health workers address the issues most basic to the quality of out
everyday lives, and they are charged with the protection of our most valuable
resource and most vulnerable population--our children~ This work carries with
it tremendous responsibility as well as immeasurable rewards.

We at GlaxoSmithKline congratulate all of the nominees and dedicate this
publication to all public health professionals. By widely distributing this booklet,
we hope to increase innovative programming in the public health community.
We are continually amazed and inspired by their creativity, dedication, and
sheer willpower. What public health professionals accomplish with limited
resources for the people of their communities is truly astounding. Each public
health professional is an example, of the tremendous achievements that are pos-
sible when they are passionate about their work and true to their ideals. The
GlaxoSmithKline Child Health Recognition Awards honor individuals and
health departments involved i,n tackling a wide variety of child health issues.
The awards help create a forum for sharing ideas and achievements so that we
can learn from each other and replicate effective programs. On behalf of all the~
children public health professionals serve, thanks for being a true friend.
