The Selection Process

GlaxoSmithKline distributes nomination forms each April for the Child Health
Recognition Awards. Anyone with sufficient knowledge regarding the activities
of an individual or health department may submit a nomination, and
completed forms must be received by a deadline in late May. A selection
committee comprised of health care professionals evaluates the nominations
and makes its decisions based on how well nominees assess their community's
needs, use innovative approaches, efficiently use resources, obtain measurable
results, collaborate with others, and improve access to services. A special
ceremony honoring award recipients and nominees is held in North Carolina
and Georgia. The awards include monetary grants for educational and other
purposes and are made in three categories.

The Individual Recognition Award is given to an individual who has made an
outstanding contribution to improving children's health services through either
a single effort or a series of achievements. The award consists of a monetary
grant of up to $1,000 given to the state's public health association in the name
of the award recipient.

The Local Health Department Recognition Award recognizes local health
departments that have developed an innovative program that has produced
measurable, sustainable outcomes. Up to three local health departments receive
grants of up to $5,000 to be used by the gransees for activities such as special
projects, staff development, and educational materials.

The Public Health Staff Recognition Award is given to individuals who are
either full or part-time employees or retirees of local health departments in
recognition of outstanding service in preventive health activities in their local
communities. Up to two awards are made consisting of grants of up to $500.
The grantees use the grant for special projects, personal development, and
educational~ materials.
