October 24, 2000

CABARRUS HEALTH ALLIANCE

partio,l*r complaint .originated because they had dug into the top of the drainfield while
planting a rose bush.

Lot 20 and 22.- The c0mplaln~ is that both septic systems were failing because they had
been pumpedout. The comments for both of these lots are the same as for lot 6 and need
to be emphasized. Pumping out a septic tank with any amount Of frequency does not
constitUte a public health problem. Ir does indicate that there are mauy solids being put into
· the system. The primary purpose of the tank is to retain solids while discharging wastewater
into the drainfield. At the rime of inspection, both systems appeared to be function!ng in a
sanitary manner..

Lot 28 - The complaint was "water' on drainfield". An inspection.of the drainfield indicated
that it was functioning in a sanitary manner with no signs of any past failu/e. There are some
. low areas over the drainfield where water can pond if it rains a lot. These low areas are a'
product of the ground settling where the septic' lines 'were excavated and where the
homeoWner's children had dug up some soil to make r. amps to jump their bicycles. It does
not appear to have effected the system in any adverse manner. The homeoWner informed us
that they are in the process of landscaping this area.

Lot 34 - The complaint was that the septic is leaching. Mr. Osborne had been to this site
previously on May 25, 2000 for a consultative visit with the homeowner. It was not surfacing
on that date but the homeoWner Was concerned because there was some dampness over the
lines. The dampness Was in part due to the capilla~ ·action that takes place naturally when
Water is placed in the ground. The dampness Was visible because at tha~ time no vegetation
was established in the yard. Mr. Osborne's 'recommendations were to do some minor
landscaping over the system and try to establish a good stand of grass over the drainfield. At
· the time of the investigation, the yard had been seeded but no grass had been established.
The system appeared to be functioning in a sanita~ rn .~er but the ground was wet because
the homeoWner had been .Watering his yard to tr7 to get the grass to grow.

Lot 38 - At the time of investigation the septic system was functioning in a sanitary manner.
This system has been rna!fimcfioning in the past and Mr. Osborne had worked with the
homeowner and the developer to correct the problem. The homeowner was at home at the
time of the investigation and was pleased with the way the system was currently functioning.'

Lot 59 - The comPlaint:was that the septic r, nl~ was not covered properly. The septic tank is
· located to the side of the home and it does not appear that the tank has ever had any finish
grading work done over it. Although it is not required it is suggested that the area over and
around the system ('mducling the tank)be shaped to shed surface water. At the time of the
investigation, the system appeared to be functioning in a sanitary mariner.

Public Health Authority of Cabarrus County
1307 South Cannon Boulevard * Kannapolis, North Carolina 28083 · 704/939-1200 · Fax: 704/933-3345
