Lagano: According to my April 99, 1998 correspondence to you, we reviewed the iml~&c~ on our schools regarding the development of the Wallace Farm property. At that rime, W. R. Ode11 was 19 sCuden=s of reaching =heir core capacity of 864 B=udents. Also, we no, ed that the Board was exploring o~tionB to address the overcrowding at Northwest Cabarrus Middle ~chool ~d High School. On June 8, 1998 the Board implemented a ca,ping ~lan for the middle and high echooi. This plan assigned new ~udent~ moving in~o the Northwest cabarrue attendance area after July 1, 1998 to si=her Kan/~apolis or Concord dis=riots. The cap ha~ been lifted at Northwest Cabarrus High School since =hey did not reach their core capacity of 1500. ~n addi=ion to =he middle school being capped, J. N. Fries Middle School and Central cabarrus High School are also card a= the ~resent The enrollment at W. R. Odell has increased to 904 ~tuden~s ae of December 7, 1998. This is an increase of 59 students sioce our April letter (40 sCuden=s over core capacity}. It ia our understanding that conv~issioner~s a~proved the Highland Creek d~velol~aent located in ~he W. R. Odell a=~ndance area. Our next closest school is Wedding~con Hills which is S2 atudent~ over their core capacity of 1000. When the approved new high school is compLe~e~ Ln the Pitts School Road area it will reduce overcrowding and absorb new growth in the Northwest Cabarrus and Central Cabarrus a~enda/~ce area~. However, there are ~o p~ans for a new middle school in thi~ area ~o compliment this new high school. Ws anticipate all four middle schools being over their core capacity wi=bin two year~.
