The current soil conditions at these two school/park sites do not contain necessary soil
amendments to produce a healthy turf surface for community athletic programs.
According to the North Carolina soil test completed for these sites, the site soil does not
include some of the basic elements such as nitrogen, boron and humus base necessary for
turf surfaces. Over the past several months, a team of officials from the City of Concord,
Cabarrus County, and Cabarrus County schools met regularly to discuss potential
options to improve the soil conditions for the establishment of turf on these sites. With
assistance from David Goforth from Cabarrus County Cooperative Extension and Dennis
Testerman from Cabarrus County Soil and Water District, the group recommended to
rototill into the soil a variety of amendments, such as turkey litter, compost and liming.
These elements will assist in the rebuilding of soil structure and replenish most of the
sixteen elements needed for turf growth. Another major element needed for turf growth
is continuous water; therefore, an irrigation system is proposed. Drilling a well is
proposed for watering the irrigation of these facilities.

Cabarms County School Systems is also an active partner in these two projects. The
school system is performing the following project elements toward these two school/park

facilities:
(1)
(2)

(3)
(4)
(5)

raising catch basins (Concord Middle School) $5,000
constructing a well for irrigation (Concord Middle School-Eastside
Elementary) $7,500
fine grading for athletic facilities $2,000
turfing improving materials/contract labor $4,100
athletic fencing (Concord Middle School - Eastside Elementary) $60,000
for a total $78,600 toward these school/park sites.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at your convenience.
