in four months, provide trained/professional staff to serve as instructors, lifeguards, servers,
dishwashers, custodians, etc. A part-time nurse has been provided through the NorthEast
Medical Center to provide health screenings for program participants and educational
programs/presentations that promote a healthy lifestyle for older adults.

Since January 4. 1999 this program has experienced overwhelming growth in all areas of
participation and service. There were two existing Nutrition Program for the Elderly sites in
Karmapolis (First Baptist Church and Royal Oaks United Methodist Church). The combined total
enrollment was 94 participants. By mid-May the enrollment in the Lunch Plus Club at the
Cannon Memorial YMCA is over 900 participants and growing weekly. The combined average
daily attendance was 60 participants prior to the consolidation of these two programs. We are
currently averaging between 225 and 250 participants per day.

Another tmique characteristic of this partnership has allowed us to make this a true community
based program instead of a county based program. Since Kannapolis is split by the
Rowan/Cabarms county line, we were faced with a situation that would allow one participant
access to all of these programs and/or services while his/her neighbor across the street was not
eligible to participate since he/she did not live in Cabarrus County. Mr. Murphy was successful
in an attempt to negotiate an agreement between the Cabarrus County Department of Aging and
the Rowan County Senior Services Department that allows Rowan County to reimburse Cabarrus
Count· for any meals provided to Rowan County residents through this program.

We are excited about the immediate success of this program and the enormous potential that we
have to provide what we believe to be one of the best overall health promotion and wellness
programs for older adults anywhere. Our plan is to expand this program throughout Cabarrus
Count),' to all of the Lunch Plus Sites. We will satellite fitness, educational, health promotional
and leisure classes/programs to four other Lunch Plus sites during fiscal year 1999-2000 and will
expand the overall format of this program as additional facilities and/or resources are available.

COST SAVINGS/I-IIGHER SERVICE/COST AVOIDANCE IiV[PACTS:

To date we have received the following grants and/or contributions:

City of Kannapolis Recreation Commission
CiD' of Kannapolis Community Development Board
United Way of Central Carolinas, Inc. (3 year commitment)
Sisters of Mercy of North Carolina Foundation, Inc.
Centralina Council of Governments -Area Agency on Aging

$ 6,000
$ 5,000
$10,000
$25,000
$17,000,

We continue our search for additional fundihg sources and'a/'e currently in the ~rocess
applying for several additional grants. Contributions from participants of this program are
averaging approximately twice as much per Rarticipant as conlpared with the other Lunch Plus
Club locations throughout Cabarrus County. [

By developing this network of local service provider agencies/organizations that share the
common goal of maxirnJzlng services for older adults while mi~imlzing duplication of services,
we have been able to achieve a level of success that none of the participating agencies ever
imagined. By utilizing all of these available resources, we have increased the number of
registered participants by approximately 900% while increasing the average number o'f meals
served per day by approximately 375% in a four-month period of time.
