Ronald Ayoook, Executive Director ' <br /> <br />Date: April 4, 1997 <br /> <br />During its meeting on April 2, 1997, the Association's Board of Directors voted to support the Excellent <br />Schools Act advocated by Governor Hunt, and introduced by House Speaker Brub~ker and Senate President <br />Pro Tern Basnight. The Board also urged each county to write a letter or adopt a n,,solution in support of the <br />Act, forwarding these to local legislators and legislative leaders. <br /> <br />The Governor mid the Board that our future success in economic ffrov~h depends on how well we can <br />improve [he performance of public schools in K-12. The major components of the ,i.ct include: <br /> <br />· Raising Academic Standards in reading, writing and math using the ABC initiative ~md the Standards & <br /> Accountability Commission. <br /> <br />· Raising Standards & Accountability for Teachers, with consequences for both success and failure. <br /> <br />*Providing Higher Pay for Higher Performance, including rewarding teachers for major achievemcms, such as <br /> passing the National Board Certification exam and/or completing a rigorous '..~aster's prosram; <br /> increasing starting salaries; providing major career point into'cases; and providing bonuses for those <br /> that commit to teaching another five years at year $ and year 13, <br /> <br /> <br />
