Part I.
GEOGRAPHIC AND SOLID WASTE
STREAM EVALUATION

Geographic Area
This solid waste management plan covers Cabarrus County and three of its
four incorporated municipalities. A portion of the City of Kannapolis is in
Rowan County but all waste is currently handled at the Cabarrus County
landfill.

Table 1. Estimated Population, July 1996

I
MUNICIPALITIES & COUNTY I POPULATION
Cabarrus County 115,108
City of Kannapolis 25,610
City of Concord 35,468
Town of Mount Pleasant 1,143
Town of Harrisburg 2,192

Note:Municipality population numbers based on 1995 figures.

According to projections made by the North Carolina Office of Planning, State
Demographer's Office, Cabarrus County is expecting a steady growth of
approximately 1.5% annually, for a total projected population of 137,212 over
the 10 year plan period.

Waste Stream Evaluation
In this plan, residential waste refers to waste generated by households
(individual and multifamily dwellings). The term non-residential refers to
waste generated from commercial, industrial, and institutional activities.
Construction and demolition waste is generated from construction activities
and is separated from non-residential waste in this plan because it will be
disposed in a different facility than most non-residential waste.

Cabarrus County and its municipalities disposed of approximately 99,326 tons
of waste in FY 1995-96, 38,395 tons were disposed of in the County landfill and
60,931 were taken out of the County for disposal at other facilities. An estimate
of the waste disposed by sector is shown in Table 2. These calc-lations are
based on tonnages provided by county staff.

CDM Camp Dresser & McKee

Part I. - 1
