Each section includes an assessment of
the current program and a summary of the intended actions.

Source Reduction
Current Program: There are currenQy no official source reduction programs
in the County or the municipalities.

Intended Actions: There are no plans for an official County source
reduction program at this time.

Collection of Solid Waste
Current Progrant. Residential waste collection is provided by private
haulers for the unincorporated areas of the County. Curbside residential waste
collection is provided by each municipality (Kannapolis, Mount Pleasant and
Harrisburg). -

Commercial, industrial and institutional waste generators are required by the
County and the municipalities to contract with private companies for waste
hauling services. The exception to this is the Town of Mount Pleasant who
will collect waste from four commercial generators who do not exceed a two
container maximum limit.

The City of Kannapolis and the Town of Harrisburg both offer a "clean up
day" where they will pick up bulky items free of charge. The Town of Mount.
Pleasant will pick up bulky items on request for a $100.00 fee.

Intended Action~. At the time this report was written, neither the County
nor the municipaliQes had a firm idea of what the future of waste collection
will be. Each entity will be fimring up their waste collection program once the
County decides on a collection and ~i~posal option following the closure of the
landfill in December, 1997.

Camp Dresser & McKee

Part V. - 1
