n :~e, abar~ s',swmp*,pfan3 <br /> <br /> Part V. <br /> Solid Waste Management Methods: <br />Assessment of Programs and Description of Intended Actions <br /> <br />Recycling and Reuse <br />Recycling <br />Current Program: The Cabarrus County recycling program consists of three <br />drop box locations which collect glass, steel and aluminum cans, plastic and <br />newspaper. The drop boxes are open seven days a week, 24 hours a day. The <br />County operates a convenience center located at the landfill which is open to <br />the public Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday 8:00 <br />a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The convenience center offers expanded materials collection. <br />In addition to the materials listed for drop box locations, the convenience <br />center also accepts cardboard, vinyl, scrap metal, white goods, scrap tires, used <br />motor oil, batteries and yard waste. This facility al.~o acts as the central <br />sorting and processing location for the recycled materials collected at the drop <br />box locations. <br /> <br />In addition to the public program, the County operates an internal computer <br />and white paper collection program. A private company provides the <br />containers and collection on an as needed basis. <br /> <br />The City of Kannapolis does not operate a recycling program. However, two <br />recycling drop centers are provided by the County. <br /> <br />The Town of Harrisburg offers once a week curbside pick up. Recyclables are <br />sent to North Mecklenberg Sanitation. <br /> <br />Mount Pleasant has contracted with a private company to provide curbside <br />pickup of recyclables. <br /> <br />Recycled materials and tonnages handled by the County in the 1995 and 1996 <br />fiscal year are summarized below in Table 6. <br /> <br />Table 6.
