HISTORY

Stanley Works, Kannapolis NC

Through 150 years of prosperity & growth, Stanley Works has been a worldwide
manufacturer and marketer of tools, hardware and specialty hardware products for home
improvement, consumer, and industrial use. Over those years, Stanley Works has earned a
worldwide reputation for excellence. In order to retain that image, Stanley Works has rebuilt its
distribution network and has implemented an advanced Warehouse Management System
(WMS).

Stanley Works has implemented the largest and most radical re-engineering program in
its history. This included the consolidation of Stanley Works' four major division's distribution
networks, into two state of the art facilities, known as the Stanley Customer Support Distribution
Centers. The initial efforts of the distribution centers are aimed at developing stronger
relationships with Stanley Works' key North American customers. The size and rapid growth of
these customers have required Stanley Works to change the way they do business in order to
remain competitive. The first steps required to achieve perfect customer service are the
development of a common order management system and a consolidated distribution network
shared across divisions.

A shared distribution network strategy is driven by overall business requirements and
supply chain strategy, not merely logistics cost savings. Today customers are requiring efficient
replenishment capabilities and increasingly stringent service requirements such as consolidated
orders, single shipments and value added services. Specifically, Stanley felt the ongoing pressure
to reduce operating costs while maintaining/improving service levels.

The shift from decentralized distribution to centralized networks marks the first time in
Stanley Works' history that Stanley's four largest divisions (Stanley Tools, Hardware, Fastening
Systems and Mechanics Tools) will be shipped to customers around the nation from two
locations. In the past, each of these divisions had its own distribution network, its own list of
customers and essentially operated as its own entity. The concept of shared distribution of the
divisions allows customers to deal with only one Stanley Works. Previously, for a customer to
place an order they would have called four different numbers and would eventually receive four
separate deliveries.
