Extension Service / Agricultural Fair Continued

The fair provides Extension an opportunity and place to fulfill our mission in
a very cost effective manner. There is no other place that Extension could be
during fair week that would allow such a great amount of face to face contact
with our clients and potential clients.
The fair has large numbers of Cabarrus citizens congregated in one place and
allows CES a varied and infmmal teaching opportunity without spending time
to travel to the different locations.
Animal shows and exhibits demonstrate the educational aspect of animal
husbandry and are discussed in detail. This helps to promote agriculture, and
improve livestock including management and breeding. New ideas,
equipment, techniques and information are shared with producers, clients and
the general public.

Volunteerism

Volunteerism and leadership are important in Extension programming and
teaching. Volunteers originate, develop, design, construct and set up
educational exhibits on issue-based programs. This involves assembling
planning committees, family members and community resources to put the
exhibits together. Volunteers include Extension Homemakers, 4-H,
agriculture groups and non-profit organizations. Volunteers tell fair goers
about exhibits, handwork, agriculture and horticulture products, and register
and display approximately 3,500 articles. They have to be creative and
committed to get the job done in a short time frame.

4-H and Youth Benefit

One reason Cabarrus 4-H'ers have been able to excel on the state and national
levels with their record books and other activities is because we have the fair
that provides an excellent showcase for projects and leadership skills. For
example, a live 4-H booth is conducted during six nights at the fair and gives
our youth opportunities to develop and expand their leadership and speaking
abilities.

Bottom Line

CES in Cabarrus County puts the fair on a high priority during the 2 - 3 week
period because our advisory leadership system and clientele include the fair as
one of their recommendations.
