This project is part of the state's larger goal
to create an intrastate system of roads. One
goal of this system is to have a four-lane
highway within 10 minutes drive of 96% of
the population. Of more local importance is
the fact that this route will connect Charlotte
and Morehead City, along with cities in
between such as Fayetteville and
Jacksonville.

The combination of the improvements to NC
24/27 and other Mecklenburg County
projects will greatly affect the area's
accessibility. The Charlotte outerbelt (I-
485) will be approximately eight miles from
the crossroads. This will increase the
accessibility of the area to the entire region.

Local roads are largely country lanes and
most are more than adequate for the traffic
that they carry. The NC Department of
Transportation maintains most of these
secondary roads with improvements to them
made through the State Secondary Road
Paving Program.

TRANSPORTATION - RAIL, OTHER

The rail line that goes through old Midland
connects to Monroe and Charlotte to the
west and to Wilmington to the east. It is not
heavily used; only one to two trains pass
through daily. However, the NC
Department of Transportation is currently
studying this corridor for potential passenger
service in the future.

Public transportation is almost non-existent
in Cabarrus County. Transportation services
are provided to the elderly and handicapped
citizens through the Department of Aging
and the Elderly and Handicapped
Transportation Assistance Program
(EHTAP). These are the only public
transportation services offered in the
County. As the population and employment
opportunities grow in the Midland area,
public transportation will become more
feasible. Possible furore routes might
connect the crossroads or old Midland to
Concord or to the Charlotte outerbelt or
downtown area.

13
