Special Populatiotts / Special Events Division <br /> <br /> The Special Populations/Special Events Division is <br />responsible forprogramm ing the department's special events <br />such as holiday festivals, community- events, and annual <br />athletic competitions. The division is also a liaison with <br />other community agencies in developing recreational op- <br />portunities for special populations. In addition, the division <br />supervisor acts as local coordinator for both Cabarrus Senior <br />Games and Cabarrus Special Olympics. Lastly, the Special <br />Populations/Special Events Supervisor works closely with <br />the other departmental divisions and staff in the planning, <br />development, and implementation of county-wide recre- <br />ation programs. <br /> <br />Special Events <br /> <br /> 1995-96 county-wide special events that were devel- <br />oped and administered by the Special Populations/Special <br />Events Division included: <br /> <br />Holiday Highlight: The sixth annual Holiday Highlight <br />was held at Frank Liske Park in December and attracted over <br />3,000 people. This popular family event was expanded into <br />a three day festival that included an evening drive through <br />the park to enjoy a holiday celebration of over 10,000 <br />holiday lights, music, live nativity scene, and Santa and Mrs. <br />Clause. <br /> <br />Santa Visits: During a two week period around Christmas, <br />Santa visited over 35 day care centers, schools, and nursing <br />homes throughout the county. The visils consisted of personal <br />interaction, photo opportunities, and handing out candy. <br /> <br />The Share Cabarrus "Run for Your Life" 5K, 8K, and 1 <br />Mile Fun Walk: The second annual road race was held in <br />conjunction with the Cabarrus Chamber of Commerce's <br />Share Cabarrus Festival that was held in May. The race was <br />run in Concord's downtown, historic district and attracted <br />over 120 runners and walkers. <br /> <br />Thanksgiving "Leftovers" Race: The first annual 8K, 5K, <br />& 1 Mile Fun Run was held the Saturday after Thanksgiving. <br />Left over trophies and shirts were awarded to all participants. <br />Habitat for Humanity was the beneficiary. <br /> <br />WesternFest - The second annual sanctioned Jr. Rodeo: <br />Frank Liske Park was the sight of this successful October <br />event. Over 100 participants entered while approximately <br />1,000 were in attendance. <br /> <br />13 <br /> <br /> <br />
