Cabarrus Senior Games <br /> <br /> As the Cabarrus Senior Games local coordinator, the <br />Special Populations/Special Events Supervisor works with a <br />ten member steering committee. The committee consists of <br />staff from county agencies and departments that provide <br />senior services and a number of active seniors from the <br />county. The committee is responsible for fund raising, solic- <br />iting sponsors, locating various facilities~ and communicat- <br />ing and marketing the program to seniors in the coanty. <br />Cabarrus Senior Games has an open games policy which <br />allows any individual 55 years and better to compete in the <br />local games. <br /> <br /> In August Cabarrus Senior Games hosted the ninth <br />annual Fall Warm-up Bowling Tournament. The event at- <br />tracted 85 bowlers from throughout the Piedmont area. In <br />September, 40 medalists from the 1995 local games repre- <br />sented Cabarrus County in the North Carolina Senior Games <br />State Finals competition in Raleigh. A number of gold, <br />silver, and bronze medals were brought home by Cabarrus <br />County participants. <br /> <br />Cabarrus Senior Games local competition was held through- <br />out the month of May. The local games consisted of opening <br />ceremonies, athletic competition, the S ilv erArts Display and <br />Follies, and the closing ceremonies. This year's Opening <br />Ceremo~v was held at Les Myers Park and attracted 100 <br />competitors and spectators. A total of 125 seniors competed <br />in 28 athletic events throughout the county. The SilverArts <br />Display was comprised of the visual, literary and heritage <br />arts and included 20 local senior artisans. <br /> <br /> In June, an icc cream social was held to congratulate all <br />local games participants and to plan for State Finals compe- <br />tition in Raleigh this October. <br /> <br /> The SilverArts Follies included 40 performers. Upon <br />the conclusion of the two weeks of local games, the Closing <br />Ceremony dinner and dance was held at the David H. <br />Murdock Senior Center and was attended by 100 competi- <br />tors, spouses, volunteers and staff. <br /> <br />Athletic Division <br /> <br /> The Athletic Division operates programs for youth and <br />adults that consist of leagues, tournaments, special events <br />and clinics. Programs offered are co-sponsored with local <br />youth athletic associations, Concord Parks and Recreation <br />Department, Cannon Memorial YMCA, U.S.S.S.A. and <br /> <br />15 <br /> <br /> <br />
