N.S.A. softball organizations, and local businesses. The past <br />year has seen a leveling off in the number of participants in <br />youth athletics after a period of growth throughout the <br />county. There are leagues offered in soccer, football, bas- <br />ketball, baseball, and softball. Adult programs include bas- <br />ketball and softball leagues. The Athletic Division strives to <br />provide programs that will instill valuable lessons in <br />sportsmanship, fa/r play and team work. Educational programs <br />such as the training of officials, coaches and league admin- <br />istrators are part of what makes the Athletic Division a <br />valuable asset to the community. <br /> <br />Youth Soccer <br /> <br /> One hundred youth soccer teams participated in rec- <br />reational leagues across the county.~Leagues are offered for <br />boys and girls ages 6 - 17. Games are played on Saturdays, <br />and run from mid September to mid November at local <br />schools and parks. <br /> <br />Youth Football- <br /> <br /> Fall youth football is offered for boys ages 10 - 12. <br />Leagues are operated by the Mt. Pleasant Athletic Association <br />and the Cannon Memorial YMCA butare open to all residents. <br />Games are played on Saturdays at Mt. Pleasant Middle <br />School and the YMCA fields beginning in October and <br />running through November. <br /> <br />Youth Basketball <br /> <br /> Youth basketball has a participation total of over 130 <br />teams competing in divisions for boys and girls, age 6 - 17. <br />Thc season begins in December and runs through March. <br />Games are played at school facilities, city recreation centers <br />and YMCA facilities. <br /> <br />Youth Baseball <br /> <br /> Youth baseball remains very popular on the recreational <br />level with 106 teams competing in the 9 to 15 year old <br />divisions. In the 8 year old and under instructional leagues, <br />111 teams participated. Games begin in April and continue <br />through June, and are played at school facilities and city <br />recreation facilities. <br /> <br />Youth Softball <br /> <br /> Seventy teams took partin girls softball leagues offered <br />for ages 8 - 10, 11 - 12, and 13 - 18. Forty-nine teams played <br />slow pitch; 21 played fast pitch, a new program introduced <br /> <br />16 <br /> <br /> <br />
