Cabarrus Special Olympics <br /> <br />Alpine Ski Program - The Cabarrus Special Olympics Al- <br />pine Ski program began "Dry-Land Training" in October. <br />Eight Special Olympics Athletes and six coaches attended the <br />North Carolina Special Olympics Winter Games and the <br />Southeast Regional SpecialOlympics Winter Games in Boone, <br />NC in January. The Cabarrus County delegation competed <br />against Special Olympics Athletes from six states. <br /> <br />Aquatics Program ~The.~------------------~ar~us speciaIOlympiesAqu atics <br />program began in September and continued thru May. This <br />program involved approximately 80 local athletes, coaches, <br />and volunteers. These participants met each Monday and <br />trained at various levels, from non-swimmers to competitive <br />Special Olympics Swim Team members. Sixty athletes, <br />coaches and volunteers participated in the Cabarrus Special <br />Olympics Aquatics competition at the Cannon Memorial <br />YMCA in Kannapolis in April. Ten Cabarrus Special Olym- <br />pics Athletes and two local Swim Coaches joined our Athlet- <br />ics Athletes in Greenville, NC for the North Carolina Special <br />Olympics Summer Games in May. <br /> <br />Athletics Program - Approximately 800 Cabarrus Special <br />Olympics athletes, coaches and volunteers participated in the <br />local Special Olympics Spring Games at Mt. Pleasant High <br />School in April. These athletes participated in various track <br />and field events, individual sports skills and motor activity <br />events. Thirty-one athletes and nine coachesjoinedthe Aquat- <br />ics Team in Greenville, NC for the North Carolina Special <br />Olympics Summer Games in May. <br /> <br /> Several exciting changes are taking place in Special <br />Olympics world-wide: These changes are:resulting in many <br />new opportunities for the Special Olympics Athletes in <br />Cabarrus County, as well as the entire community. In an effort <br />to improve the training that~eur local~athletes receive, and to <br />make our local program a "year-round" sports training and <br />competition program for athletes with mental retardation, <br />several new sports are being planned. In the past several <br />months nine local coaches have completed the appropriate <br />NorthlCarolina Special Olympics Training Schools and have <br />received official Coaching Certificates in Alpine Skiing, <br />Athletics, Bocce, Roller Skating and Tennis. Other coaches <br />are scheduled to attend training schools in aquatics, basket- <br />ball, volleyball, and golf. <br /> <br />13 <br /> <br /> <br />
