Traffic Impact Report
Zoning Petition 95-06
Pg. 2

cars making predominantly left tums out of the site significantly increases the degree of
hazard and the likelihood of accidents.
Conditions may not be attached to a standard rezoning, but should the property be
rezoned staffwill forward the following recommendations to the NCDOT District Office.
These recommendations would then be reviewed by the District Engineer before issuing
the required driveway permits.

1) Creation of a center turn lane from US601 to a reasonable and safe distance
beyond the site until the construction of NC49 improvements.
This will allow the safe movement of trucks and autos out of the lane of traffic to
make left turns into the site. Widening improvements to NC49 include a four lane divided
highway with a grassy center barrier preventing west bound left turn movements into the
site. NCDOT will consider installing left turn lanes to cross the median at the terminal
trucking entrance. The advantage exists for the parcel immediately across NC49 to align
an entrance at that point. Plans do not include parallel roads to carry traffic to the nearest
light controlled intersection. These access and turn issues will be left for the property
owner to resolve independently.

2) Provision of Acceleration and Deceleration lanes
In keeping with a goal to maintain traffic safety it is important to provide
acceleration and deceleration lanes for trucks and/or cars to get out of the lane of traffic to
make safe turns. NC49 continues to carry an increasing amount of vehicles and will carry
even more as a result of the scheduled improvements.

3) Site Access Improvements
NCDOT minimum driveway widths for truck terminal facilities is 50'. It is
strongly recommended that this be increased to 75' to allow safe truck movements
entering and exiting the site.
