Special Populations / Special Events Division <br /> <br /> The Special Populations/Special Events Division is re- <br />sponsible for programming the department's special events <br />such as holiday festivals, community events, and annual <br />athletic competitions. The division is also a liaison with other <br />community agencies in developing recreational opportunities <br />for special populations. In addition, the division supervisor <br />acts as local coordinator for both Cabarrus Senior Games and <br />Cabarrus Special Olympics. Lastly, the Special Populations/ <br />Special Events Supervisor works closely with the other de- <br />partmental divisions and staff in the planning, development, <br />and implementation of county-wide recreation programs. <br /> <br />Special Events <br /> <br /> 1994-95 county- wide special events that were developed <br />and administered by the Special Populations/Special Events <br />Division included: <br /> <br />Senior Carnival: This first-time event was held at Les Myers <br />Park in November and was a joint venture between Cabarrus <br />County Parks and Recreation, the City of Concord Parks and <br />Recreation, the YMCA David H. Murdock Senior Center, and <br />the Cabarrus Senior Center. Over250 Cabarrus County seniors <br />attended this eventdesigned to bring local older adults together <br />for socialization, competition, and to introduce seniors to <br />county recreation providers. <br /> <br />Holiday Highlight and Hop: The fifth annual Holiday <br />Highlight and Hop was held at Frank Liske Park in December <br />and attracted over 3,000 people. This popular family event <br />was expanded into a three day festival that included an <br />evening drive through the park to enjoy a holiday celebration <br />of over 10,000 holiday lights, music, live nativity scene, and <br />Santa and Mrs. Clause. The Holiday Highlight Hop was a late <br />afternoon 8 k road race and one mile fun walk that finished <br />through a corridor of lighted luminaries in Frank Liske Park. <br /> <br />Santa and Easter Bunny Visits: During a two week period <br />around Christmas and Easter, Santa and the Easter Bunny <br />visited over 35 day care centers, schools, and nursing homes <br />throughout the county. The visits consisted of personal inter- <br />action, photo opportunities, and handing out candy. <br /> <br />The Share Cabarrus "Run for Your Life" 5K, 8K, and 1 <br />Mile Fun Walk: This first annual road race was held in <br />conjunction with the Cabarrus ChamberofCommerce's Share <br />Cabarrus Festival that was held in May. The race was run in <br />Concord's downtown, historic district and attracted over 120 <br />runners and walkers. <br /> <br />14 <br /> <br /> <br />
