Junior Special Olympics: Junior Special Olympics is a non- <br />competitive program designed for children under the age of <br />eight [hat are too young for Special Olympics. Approximately <br />75 athletes, teachers, parents, and student volunteers partici- <br />pated in the field day at Hartsell School in May. Cabarrus <br />Junior Special Olympics is coordinated by a member of the <br />Cabarrus Special Olympics Steering Committee. <br /> <br />Cabarrus Senior Games <br /> <br /> As the Cabarms Senior Games local coordinator, [he <br />Special Populations/Special Events Supervisor works with a <br />ten member steering committee. The committee consists of <br />staff from county agencies and departments that provide <br />senior services and a number of active seniors from the <br />county. The committee is responsible for fund raising, solic- <br />iting sponsors, locating various facilities, and communicating <br />and marketing the program to seniors in the county. Cabarrus <br />Senior Games has an open games policy which allows any <br />individual 55 years and better to compete in the local games. <br /> <br /> In August Cabarrus Senior Games hosted the eighth <br />annual Fall Warm-up Bowling Tournament. The event at- <br />tracted 40 bowlers from throughout the Piedmont area. In <br />September, 40 medalists from the 1994 local games repre- <br />sented Cabarrus County in the North Carolina Senior Games <br />State Finals competition in Raleigh. A number of gold, silver, <br />and bronze medals were brought home by Cabarrus County <br />participants. <br /> <br />Cabarrus Senior Games local competition was held through- <br />out the month of May. The local games consisted of opening <br />ceremonies, athletic competition, the SilverArts Display and <br />Follies, and the closing ceremonies. This year's Opening <br />Ceremony was held at Les Myers Park and ata'acted well over <br />200 competitors and spectators and featured Roman Gabriel, <br />former professional football player and North Carolina Senior <br />Games Board Member. A total of 125 seniors competed in 28 <br />athletic events throughout the county. The SilverArts Display <br />was comprised of the visual, literary and heritage arts and <br />included local senior artisans. The SilverArts Follies included <br />49 performers. Upon the conclusion of the two weeks of local <br />games, [he Closing Ceremony dinner and dance was held at <br />the David H. Murdock Senior Center and was attended by over <br />100 competitors, spouses, volunteers and staff. <br /> <br /> In June, an ice cream social was held to congratulate all <br />local games participants and to plan for State Finals competi- <br />tion in Raleigh this September. <br /> <br />16 <br /> <br /> <br />
