LCAS m
NOItTH

MEMORANDUM

TO:

FROM:

John V. Witherspoon, County Manager
D~oorhead, Personnel Officer

DATE: February 1, 1994

SUBJECT: Conversion of Annual Leave to Sick Leave

I recommend that the Board of Commissioners adopt the attached resolution implementing an
Annual Leave Conversion Policy. The conversion of excess vacation leave to sick leave would be
beneficial to deserving employees by increasing available sick leave and its possible use toward
retirement. This could be expected to improve employee morale and keep Cabarms County in
line with the many cities and counties that are passing similar resolutions.

Currently employees having in excess of 240 hours vacation leave (336 hours for Emergency
Medical Services personnel on a 24 hours on, 48 hours off shift) lose those hours at the end of
each calendar year. At the end of 1993, twenty-seven employees lost 307.51 hours of vacation
leave or an average of 11.39 hours per employee. These are long-term employees that have built
up accumulated vacation leave due to their commitment to the county residents they serve.

The adoption of this resolution could be expected to have little or no financial impact on the
county. Your review and hearty endorsement of this recommendation would be appreciated.

lph

attachment

Box 707 · O,;r!cord ?lC 2;5C-25 0,7,37 -. ,7~}4) 738-S:E0 * Char!c;t~ ;.",7'~-; ,Z:S :._')
